Directions // Sydney Craft Week 2017

Working Cloth textiles studio presented DIRECTIONS as part of the inaugural Sydney Craft Week, a multimedia exhibition in collaboration with composer and sound artist Alyx Dennison. The pieces created aligned with the philosophy and personal journey of the maker. They explored the binary created from traditional techniques paired with a contemporary aesthetic. In this, DIRECTIONS serves as a tangible reverence to generations of artisans who created culture and community from their craft, but also begins a new narrative, reflective of the maker and her beliefs, aesthetics and intent.

Alyx Dennison was a founding member of award-winning experimental pop duo Kyü, which released two albums before disbanding in 2012. She has composed music for film, TV, dance, theatre and radio. Her music is characterised by her distinct voice, percussion and other-worldy sound-scapes. She has studied vocal folk traditions from around the world and has collaborated with composers such as Nick Wales (Sydney Dance Company), Megan Clune, Mark Bradshaw (Top Of The Lake) and Bree van Reyk (Synergy Percussion). Alyx has worked on Zoe Norton-Lodge’s Story Club Solo at the Sydney Opera House; Thomas E.S. Kelly’s dance work WOLLUMBIN/WARNING and Brooke Goldfinch’s short film Outbreak Generation which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival. She performed in Agatha Gothe-Snape’s work Rhetorical Chorus at Carriageworks and has been invited to undertake a residency at Campbelltown Arts Centre to develop a large-scale sound installation and vocal work.
