Wool Socks and Comfort Eating

This week’s been a busy one. I’ve been embroidering rope made of human hair onto a cream wool leisure suit for an installation at London Design Festival.

Hair work has a rich and storied past, so I’ll be devoting next week’s newsletter to all the hairy things I’ve found in my research and process.

I’m also back teaching at the New Craft House next month, in case you fancy learning to smock or quilt.

More Importantly:

Art Historian Ferren Gipson’s new video series, Object.

In the first episode, she meets Britain’s only Figurehead carver (someone who sculpts the elaborate mermaids/unicorns/mythological figures that go on the front of ships).

1974: ideas for the year 2000.

Growing garlic.

Scott Ramsay Kyle’s erotic collage.

I fell in love with David Szauder’s anatomical knit sweaters and then felt deeply sad when I realised they were just AI renders and don’t actually exist.

Thankfully, there is still lots of real knitwear out there, and it’s almost the season for wool socks and…

Comfort eating. Like Anna Jones’ Sesame and chili noodles. Nigel Slater’s Mushroom and roast garlic toast. Delia Smith’s Little Sticky Toffee Puddings with Pecan Toffee Sauce.
